RE ELECTION OF COMMITTEE

CHAIRPERSON – Mandie Moncaster

SECRETARY      -  Louise Gosling

TREASURER              -  Jill Skelley

AOB:  Coddington Scout Group now have their own website.  Martin Appleby informed secretary he would like an amendment to the 2006 AGM minutes, which stated that the committee had raised £6000 towards building funds.  This was incorrect and should have read £60,000.

Annual Review – Coddington Beavers AGM 2007

It has been another good year with the Beaver section.  Numbers are excellent, but I have struggled on my own.  Thankfully Claire Spicer helped for the most part, which took some of the pressure off me at meetings.

The Beavers took part in the District splash night and also went bowling with 100 other Beavers in Newark.

Centenary was suddenly upon us.  St George’s Day was a success again with 18 Beavers attending.  Hopefully we’ll see everybody there in 2008.

In spring I made the decision to step down as Beaver Leader. It was not an easy decision to make.  It took a while to persuade people to come on board and take over!

Thankfully we now have Sue and Kerry who will lead every week with Diane, Jackie and David supporting them in their role.  I hope you will support your new leaders and offer your help.

On 31st July 12 Beavers, myself, Claire, Sue and Kerry went to the sunrise centenary camp at Elton.  The Beavers got to sleep under canvas, do circus skills, make things and mix with other Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from the District.  I hope they had a great time.

Annual Review – Coddington Cubs AGM 2007

We started the autumn season with 15 enrolled members and 4 new ones who we are hoeing will like cubs and enrol. As we have fewer cubs than last year we are having an ‘invite a friend night’ on the 4th October in order to get a special Centenary badge as well as increase our membership.

From now until Christmas we are broadly following the Join-in-Centenary programme with the addition of the local history badge.

We have had a busy year with district events such as a campfire afternoon, international night as well as the Merit Award Competition. The Merit Award Competition judges the cubs team work and Scouting skills.  We won this competition last year, which enabled our cubs to lead the St George’s day parade this year and this year we came second with this competition.

In the summer cubs attended the sunrise camp at Elton winning 3rd place in the camp gate and shield competition, as we were the only cubs to gain a certificate we were very proud.

Last year Sebastian Page and his mother Pam helped us on a regular basis.  Pam has had to step down this year because as well as running the Explorer group she is working on a Doctorate at Sheffield University.  I must thank her for her support, as this is the second time she has helped out when we have been short handed.  The first time was when Sebastian was a cub.  Sebastian is continuing to help us and Mrs Spicer is helping us now that Harry is a cub.  We do need extra help – so if anyone can spare some time they would be made extremely welcome.

Peter and myself intend to ‘retire’ from leading cubs next Easter (or before if anyone would like to take over).  We have spent a long time with the cubs.  I became Akela in 1996 after 2 years as assistant venture leader and Peter joined me in 1997 and has helped me ever since, without him I would have had to leave running cubs several years ago.  Cubs has given us both a lot of pleasure and we have a great deal of fun with a super group of children but our health and increasing family commitments mean that we can see in the not too distant future the regular Thursday commitment will not be possible.

We need approximately £500.00 - £600.00 for capitation in January and hope to buy some cub tents with the rest.

                         `Annual Review – Coddington Scouts AGM 2007

The autumn term started with favourites such as surprise ready steady cook and team games like laggy ball and football.

In October we held a traditional games evening based loosely on a Goose Fayre theme.  The activities included apple bobbing, darts, skittles, ping pong balls into glass jars and shove halfpenny.  We served hot dogs, burgers and mushy peas.  The evening was such a success we intend to hold another one this year and we would like the scouts to bring along a friend to show the fun we have at our meetings.

The Scouts attended the annual Christmas party hosted by 6th Newark Sea Scouts and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  I only wish I had taken a camera to record the air guitar playing and the party games with balloons and newspaper!

The Scouts have worked towards and achieved numerous badges this year including pioneering, the chef’s badge and meteorology.  If I didn’t know better I would have said the weather was different over every house in Newark!

In the spring term we did a lot of cooking where meals were produced from selected cans and only the scouts with a strong constitution or the foolhardy ate the finished product.  We thought of using the left over pancakes to repair the roof, only because we couldn’t get them down off the ceiling following the pancake tossing competition.

Unfortunately we had to miss one meeting due to the gales and a dangerous tree next door and the inclement weather also meant we didn’t run a wide game in the woods but we were soon back at the scout hall planning the summer term activities.

The Scouts enjoyed a few evenings on the local park playing football and basketball in inter-patrol matches.  Some even took advantage to use the local swings and slides!

We had a good turn out for the St Georges day parade and were able model the Centenary Necker’s for the first time.  Every Scout looked smart and I was very proud of them.

In July 12 Scouts attended the centenary Sunrise camp and our unit was one of the biggest contingents there.  We purchased new equipment and the lads had a great time.  They took part in campfire songs most evenings, line dancing, bungee runs, climbing and many more activities with scouts from the Newark area. The lads also renewed their promise on the 1st of August and attended the BBQ party with fireworks in the evening. They also took part in a  half day session at the National Water sport centre where they participated in activities such as waterskiing, windsurfing, kayaking and climbing.  The Leaders also managed to get a ride on the Safety boat and Alan was afterwards heard to say that he will stick to cars in the future!

The last meeting of the year saw an historic event for the group with the attendance of the first girl.

I would like to conclude this report by saying how proud I am of the Scouts and the way they have developed over the year. It was also very gratifying when their attitude and manners were recognised by district at the camp and certificates were awarded.  I would also like to thank the other leaders for their help and commitment because without them the activities we have accomplished would not have happened
